My Back Story
Until January 2018, I had little awareness that I had an entrepreneurial spirit. In fact, back then when I would read about entrepreneurs, I had believed that I was nothing like them. They were creative, fearless, big risk takers and apparently not scared to make mistakes! And me, well I was just a lawyer.
Having my first son was the turning point for me. I had known for many years that I would eventually want my own law firm. I just didn’t know when that day would come. Once I became a mother, I knew the time had come. I was now responsible to raise another human to reach his full potential. I wanted to be the best role model that I could be for him. How could I encourage and raise him to chase his wildest dreams, if I still hadn’t? My first born son, Aiyden Swaby, was my reason for changing my whole professional life and chasing my dreams.
Aiyden was born at the end of December 2017 and by March 2018, I had found a realtor to take me around Fredericton to find buildings to buy. I was done with paying rent. I was done with not having “anything to show for it”. I still hadn’t told my partners yet as I wanted to wait to see if I could find a building first. My plan was to always take them with me as well as the staff that we had.
I remember distinctly taking Aiyden in his car seat from building to building around Fredericton when I would view properties. The looks on other realtors faces when I would show up with an infant won’t soon be forgotten. It generated a lot of questions, which, at the time I didn’t realize, was helping me to hone into my purpose. Why am I here with a baby looking at buildings?
I had told my husband my plan and he was very eager to encourage me to do what my heart wanted to do. We both knew that no matter what, we would be fine because we wouldn’t have it any other way. The first building I fell in love with did not work out, and as my husband tells the story, I cried a lot over that disappointment. Like so many other things that have happened in my life, I didn’t realize at the time that that building was not meant to work out because I was meant to find 23 Avonlea Court! And when I did, boy was I excited! A fond memory is holding my little Aiyden in my arms in front of the “sold” sign on the lawn.
I then met with my partners to share my exciting news. Looking back, I was really the only excited one. I don’t blame them though. I totally get it now. The look of surprise on their faces said it all. I quickly moved to assure them it was for “us”; the building was big enough for all of us; they would all have large offices; we had room to expand; we could have so much more and the room to boot!!
I was optimistic and arranged for them to meet me at 23 Avonlea Court shortly after my closing date so I could show them the space and again, reassure them that this was a good move for all of us and not just me. I’m a very loyal person and wouldn’t just leave them unless I had to.
Prior to this first meeting at my new building, I had known what the law firm name was going to be, but I hadn’t shared it with them yet. The time had come in July 2018. As the three of us, my two partners and I, sat around the old table that had come with the building purchase, looking around the room and chitchatting, one of them had asked me, so what’s the name gonna be?
Next to having Aiyden, the moment when I answered the ultimate question of what the law firm name would be, changed the trajectory of my professional life in an instant. I nervously looked him in the eyes and answered, “J. Donovan Law Group”. The moment of silence that followed was profound.
After some more discussion around the old table that day, my partners told me they were not interested in moving with me unless the firm name reflected our surnames like it had for over 15 years. Just as quickly as they told me they were not interested unless their names were on the building, I just as quickly emphasized that the firm name would be J. Donovan Law Group regardless. One abruptly stood up from the table, while the other one followed, and they quickly left to head back to our existing location at the time on Bishop Drive. I was left in my new boardroom, all alone, in a very quiet space, with my heart pounding.
As I sat there in silence with only my thoughts to keep me company, I realized in that moment that it was do or die time. I had only one staff that was going to be coming with me and I had a new building of over 5000 ft.² to fill and use to its biggest potential. Despite the heart pounding impact of that moment, I had zero doubt that I was not going to make it. I had zero doubt that I was not going to triumph, and I had zero doubt that I was not going to continue to be a huge success. I just didn’t know exactly how I was going to accomplish my wildest dreams of becoming a law firm full of staff and my new name – J. Donovan Law Group – becoming a household name for trusted lawyers to turn to.
The cool thing was that throughout that process of finding my own building, I also had to start another company. This other company, according to my accountants, was necessary as a holding company because now my business was growing. Being a brand new entrepreneur, there were so many things that I wasn’t aware of that I had to learn along the way. Then was born, LGLVXN Consulting Inc.
LGLVXN for short, was simply to be the company that owned title to my properties and be JDLG’s landlord. Seven years later, LGLVXN is so much more than that. It now owns 12 properties throughout the province and is the best landlord to a dozen or more tenants, mainly commercial but also a few residential. It also owns luxury homes for short term rentals. LGLVXN is also the company that promotes and manages our wedding business, including providing officiants and luxurious venues. It also offers event space for all types of functions, event planning (because I love to through epic parties), and space for conferences and other professional meetings.
Now a mother of three princes, and after having started to be asked to speak at events, including at conferences for other professionals, like real estate agents, at many legal conferences, and for women’s events and groups, I know that the time has come to embark on a new love of mine, that I was only able to discover after I made the leap into becoming an entrepreneur in January 2018.
A little over 7 years in business now on my own, I very excitedly wish to introduce Jennifer Donovan Business Coach Inc.
